This year, the WA Local Government Association’s (WALGA)’s RoadWise program is using its annual Blessing of the Roads campaign to set an Easter road safety challenge.

Through the Statewide campaign, members of the community are being challenged to make a conscious decision to be safe road users this Easter weekend.

WALGA President, Cr Lynne Craigie said Blessing of the Roads ceremonies had been organised in communities across the state – all with the same road safety message.

“All road users, whether you drive, are a passenger, walk, ride or cycle are urged to take responsibility when travelling on our roads, especially across the Easter long weekend,” Cr Craigie said.

“It is the simple actions we hear about all the time; plan ahead if drinking, slow down, buckle up, take a break every two hours on long trips and turn off your phone before driving.

“We are asking everyone to get involved and make the conscious decision to be a safe road user with every journey they make.”

WALGA’s RoadWise is working with other road safety partner agencies to create a road network that accommodates human error and limits the transfer of energy in the event of a crash through the safe system approach and the four cornerstones; safe road use, safe roads and roadsides, safe speeds and safe vehicles.

Whether planning, engineering, advocating, promoting road safety or simply practising and modelling safe road user behaviour, we can work together to save lives.

Easter road safety tips:
  • plan ahead if drinking - arrange a skipper, take public transport or stay overnight,
  • travel at a safe speed by driving to the conditions of the road,
  • buckle up when travelling in a vehicle,
  • take a break or swap drivers to prevent fatigue. Visit one of the many Driver Reviver and Coffee Stop locations around the State, and
  • turn off your mobile phone before driving.
A number of Blessing of the Roads events have already been held in communities across the State.  For a list of events held and planned, or more information about the Blessing of the Roads campaign and road safety, visit the RoadWise website at www.roadwise.asn.au.
