Workshop on Managing Sediment Loss During Urban Development

Workshop on Managing Sediment Loss During Urban Development

Description

WALGA and Perth NRM would like to invite you to a workshop on Managing Sediment Loss During Urban Development, proudly sponsored by the Sediment Task Force.
Local Government plays a key role in managing urban development.  Poor industry practices have led to sediment from construction sites entering stormwater drains, which has resulted in the deterioration of waterways and declining biodiversity.  Considerable expenditure is being incurred by Local Government to remediate affected sites and maintain drainage infrastructure.  This workshop will focus on management approaches and tools to ensure adoption of best practice management by the development and building industry, and reduce the environmental impact of urban development.
Expert speakers include representatives from the Sediment Task Force, including WALGA, Perth NRM and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.  Case studies will be provided by the Local Governments of Augusta Margaret River, Bayswater, Serpentine Jarrahdale, and Subiaco, and the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities, UWA.

The program will include:

  • the regulatory framework for managing sediment loss, including examples of recently adopted local laws, and the development of a model local law
  • the impact of sediment run-off on the health and amenity of the waterways in the Margaret River region, and community feedback
  • considerations for sediment management in different environments, from steep sites with clay soils, to large-scale new housing estates
  • positive engagement with the building industry, including training workshops and checklists of sediment management actions
  • earthworks to remove sediment deposition and remediate natural wetlands in the urban environment
  • analysis of the cost of increased maintenance activities due to sediment build-up, including street sweeping, eduction of blocked storm water drains and pits, dredging of wetlands and waterways
  • barriers to implementing compliance and enforcement; and
  • quantification of sediment export from a suburb with established housing, compared with a new estate under construction

The workshop is designed for Local Government staff working in planning and building services, environment, asset management, compliance, and health.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
