WALGA and Perth NRM are holding a joint event on Wetland Management and Restoration

This event will focus on interventions to address wetland water quality issues, such as algal blooms and aquatic weeds, as well as successful wetland restoration techniques that have transformed degraded sites into thriving ecosystems.

Expert speakers include representatives from the Department of Health, Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions,  Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Local Government Authorities of Cockburn and Bayswater, South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare, Ellen Brockman Integrated Catchment Group, and the WALGA preferred suppliers Urbaqua and GHD.

The program will include:
  • Noongar management and conservation of wetlands
  • management of nuisance and toxic algal and cyanobacterial blooms using phosphorus retention and removal treatments
  • application of technologies such as aeration, enzyme treatments and ultrasonic sound waves
  • water quality guidelines for constructed feature lakes used to irrigate public open space
  • trial of a solar powered nutrient stripping basin at Yangebup Lake
  • creation of a sustainable natural wetland at Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary no longer requiring bore water supplementation
  • prevention, early detection and management of Amazon frogbit and other aquatic weeds, and
  • the restoration of fish habitat and removal of feral fish species from the Ellen Brook by a community catchment group.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
