This event will provide information to assist Local Governments in developing strong, ongoing relationships with local Aboriginal communities that recognise our shared cultural heritage, build community capacity and celebrate successes. 

Expert speakers include Dr Richard Walley OAM, Wayne Nannup, CEO of the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council, Carol Innes and Gary Smith, co-chairs of Reconciliation WA. They will be joined by representatives from the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Northern Agricultural Catchments Council, South Coast NRM, Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa and more.  

The program will feature a range of collaborative projects being undertaken by Aboriginal communities and a number of Local Governments, including Halls Creek, Broome, Northam, Melville, Bunbury and Albany.

The program will cover:
  • Update on the South-West Native Title Settlement and identification of land for the Noongar Land Estate
  • Development of regional Reconciliation Action Plans in Local Government
  • Examples of progression through the RAP stages of reflect, innovate, stretch and elevate
  • Truth telling and how it contributes to Reconciliation
  • How Local Government can better engage with Aboriginal Communities, including Aboriginal Reference Groups and Advisory Committees
  • Broome Town Beach Redevelopment involving joint partnerships with the Yawuru community
  • Aboriginal employment initiatives at the Shire of Halls Creek, including traineeships, youth engagement and learning on country programs
  • Revitalising and maintaining Aboriginal language through dual naming of landmarks
  • Aboriginal Ranger Programs to incorporate traditional ecological knowledge in land management, including fire, weeds and feral animal control
  • Examples of Aboriginal culture and heritage projects to increase historical knowledge and understanding in communities, including memorial parks, interpretive signage, and art and sculpture
  • Supporting Aboriginal Cultural Centres
The detailed program will be available mid-July. Morning tea and lunch will be provided.

Invitation for Poster Displays
Local Governments are also invited to submit poster presentations for display at the forum.  Poster presentations provide an opportunity for Local Governments to showcase the work they are doing to deliver projects in collaboration with their local Aboriginal communities.

Poster size guide: Posters can be submitted as A1, A2 or A3 posters, or pull-up banners.
