The New Normal: Emergency Management in a Changing Climate

The New Normal: Emergency Management in a Changing Climate
12 Jun
12 Jun

Description

Climate change, driven mainly by the increase in greenhouse gas emissions from human activities, is resulting in more extreme weather events, including heatwaves, heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and an extended and more intense bushfire season. Local Government acknowledges that we need urgent action to address climate change, as outlined in WALGA’s Policy Statement on Climate Change

Please join us to hear about this ‘new normal’ of catastrophic weather risks and the implications this has for Local Governments and others engaged in emergency management and planning. The event will cover climate science, learnings from past extreme weather events, and approaches to embedding climate change considerations into emergency management and building community resilience.

The event includes a keynote address by Dr Robert Glasser, author of the special report Preparing for the Era of Disasters (March 2019) and expert speakers from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Office of Bushfire Risk Management, Department of Health, State Emergency Services, Red Cross, University of Western Australia and Local Government Insurance Scheme.

The program covers:

   •  climate science and implications for extreme weather events
   •  bushfire mapping and planning
   •  heatwaves, health and implications for Local Government
   •  coastal and flooding implications of a changing change
   •  Climate-Ready Communities project, and
   •  the practicalities of factoring climate change projections into emergency management planning.

The event will include case studies from Local Governments that are leading changes to policy and operations to adapt to the impacts of climate change and reduce the risks to their business and the communities they represent.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided.
