Climate Change Consultation Session for Local Government

Climate Change Consultation Session for Local Government
23 Oct
23 Oct

WALGA invites you to a consultation session on the Climate Change in Western Australia Issues Paper to be conducted by the Department of Environment and Water Regulation (DWER).

The Western Australian Government has released a consultation paper outlining the key issues facing Western Australia in the transition to a resilient, low-carbon economy and is seeking the views of the community and key stakeholders, including Local Government, about how to best address the risks and seize the opportunities that climate change poses. Feedback on the Issues Paper will inform the State Government’s development of its Climate Change Policy, which will be released in early 2020.

Climate Change is a key issue for Local Governments in Western Australia that cuts across almost all aspects of their operations and responsibilities.  In Western Australia, Local Governments are actively pursuing a range of emissions reduction and adaptation actions. The WALGA Climate Change Policy Statement endorsed by WALGA State Council in July 2018 represents the consolidated position of Western Australian Local Governments. It calls on the State and Commonwealth Governments to take urgent and strong action to address climate change.

This consultation session will provide Local Government officers and elected members with an opportunity to provide direct input to the development of the policy.

Speakers will include Sarah McEvoy, Executive Director Strategic Policy and officers from the Climate Change Unit of the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, and will cover options to address mitigation and adaptation in the policy.

For more information, please contact WALGA's Marketing and Event Officer, Anthea Astone or call (08) 9213 2043.
