CANCELLED - Workshop: Exploring Local Government Alliances/Partnerships to address Climate Change

In light of advice from the Australian Government and Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), WALGA is looking to implement social distancing measures in a responsible way across our business operations.

To this end, this event will now be cancelled.

We appreciate your understanding and will update this page when circumstances change so as to allow for events of this nature in future.

This event will explore ways that Local Governments can collaborate to take action on climate change in ways that may not be possible on their own and the potential for implementing similar approaches in WA.

The workshop hear presentations from:
  • Karen Gardham, Project Manager, Northern Alliances for Greenhous Action, who will talked about the Victorian Greenhouse Alliances, which operates across 70 of Victoria's 79 municipalities to deliver regional mitigation and adaptation programs;
  • Sarah Joyce, Executive Officer, Sydney Coastal Councils Group which is an alliance of councils working together to manage and protect their coastal and marine environments; and
  • Brett Ashby, Manager, Strategic Planning and Environment, City of Rockingham, who will talk about the two coastal Local Government alliances the City is involved with - the Peron-Naturaliste Partnership, and the Cockburn Sound Coastal Alliance.
The Presenters will share their experiences of establishing and working in the alliances, what works, what to avoid, and their success stories. Both Karen and Sarah will join us by a video link. The presentations will be followed by a Q and A session involving all three presenters.

The second part of the event will be a facilitated workshop where attendees will consider questions around the potential value of climate change alliance networks in WA, if so, what form these could take.

This event will be of interest to officers working in climate change and related areas, managers looking for opportunities for their Local Government to be more active in the climate change space and interested elected members.

For more information on the event or to express your interest in presenting, please contact Environment Policy Advisor, Garry Middle on (08) 9213 2049.
